Mil-DTL 15024F is a military spec engravings standard for Military identification that requires characters to be either sunken or relief etched into a metal or plastic plate. Mil-DTL 15024F requires the etched or sunken areas of military UID tags should be filled with colored paint, enamel, or lacquer with approved colors for the application. Mil-spec 15024 performance specification covers the physical characteristics of plates, tags, and bands (identification devices) used for identification of equipment.

Military spec engravings ID devices are required to be made of materials that cannot be altered by fungus and can withstand the environmental and cleaning conditions associated with the part in which it’s attached. The allowed materials for military spec engravings include, but are not limited to:

  • Corrosion-resistant steel
  • Aluminum alloy
  • Plastic

Mil-DTL 15024F Military UID Tag Recognized Defects

The list below describes major defects of military spec engravings and associated materials. 

  • The finish is blistered, flaked, peeled, chipped, cracked, softened, or not as specified
  • The finish is burred, silvered, splintered, split, delaminated, or poses threat of injury
  • The UID is of incorrect color
  • The UID is illegible
  • The related inscription or description does not conform to the specification sheet or contract requirements
  • The related materials are not as specified
  • The dimensions do not meet specified requirements

Mil-DTL 15024F Military UID Tag Testing 

Samples of any type of military spec engravings material can be selected and subjected to applicable tests. A marked item is considered a unit of product. If any sample fails a test, the lot from which the sample was taken shall be rejected.

A deterioration test looks for evidence of flaking, peeling, dissolving, distorting, softening, oxidation, discoloration, or visible presence of fungus. Presence of any of the described constitutes a failure to meet standards. A slight discoloration or fading is permissible if it does not influence the legibility of the military UID tag.
